Gary takes it as axiomatic that animals have rights just as we do. I think this an incoherent view, but at any rate it is not a rational view.
And the rational view is: there’s nothing wrong with havng pets – it’s really rather nice!

I don’t think it’s incoherent to ascribe rights to animals (though I’m not a big fan of rights-talk in general), but I do think the particular rights assumed in this article are incoherent, for reasons set out in my response post:
